The 2.3l engine in the Mazda6 has a catridge type filter. Since these aren't very common nowadays, we'll post the instructions.
The catridge makes for mess-free changes due to the nice oil filter drain, but it requires the replacement of an O-Ring every time the filter is changed. So far, only Mazda sells filters that fit- there's no aftermarket option.
If you do not like this catridge-type filter, you can buy a part from Mazda that will allow the use of traditional screw-on filters. It goes on in place of the cartridge filter mount, and is used on the 2.0l Mazda6 engine and the 2.3l engine on the Mazda3. It is a direct factory replacement.
The adapter is part # L301-14-310 and a required gasket for its installation is # LF01-14-342. Together, they should cost about $15 sans dealer price inflation, and will probably save $10 on each subsequent oil change.
